Meet the RMD Crew!! Our dogs came to us from other shelters and rescues. For various reasons they were considered un-adoptable. Here at RMD we prefer to say that they have "adoption criteria that makes them harder to place." Don't feel sorry for these guys, because they are living balanced, fulfilled lives. They have their own 'pack' of friends that they enjoy playgroup with, that they are crated next to at night, and hang out with during the day. Our dogs have more going on in a typical day at RMD, than most family dogs do. They are happy, healthy and loved.

Many people who visit our website would love to provide a home for one of our dogs, but aren't able to adopt. Ragged Mountain Dogs has created a program called K9 Angels, that helps provide for our dogs until they can be placed in loving homes. For $10 a month, you can become a K9 Angel to the dog of your choice until it is happily placed. Your $10 helps defray the cost of feeding, training, and veterinary care for your chosen dog. Commit for a minimum of 3 months and in return you will receive pictures, updates, copies of write-ups, plus best of all K9 gratitude and the knowledge that you have made a difference.

"Minnie Mouse" 12 year old Min Pin - Minnie started out with HART. She had "failed" in three homes and several foster homes, all by the time she was three years old! I decided to "take her on." Minnie LOVED to bite people. Never me, but many others! We have worked on this for years and now she only tries to go for pants legs as you go out the door!!! She wasn't really suited to re-home - so she is with me and doing great!

"Farley" 14 year old Beagle - Farley and his sister Gertie, have been with me since they were about 6 months old. They were brought to the RAWL shelter as strays. Because they are so "inbred" they have little legs that do not bend. They walk on their tippy toes. Their physical issues made them hard to adopt and they have been with us ever since. Farley has some kidney issues that are controlled with the proper diet!

"Poodie" 14 year old Beagle mix - Poodie had Parvo when she went to the RAWL shelter all those years ago. It was a long recovery process and for whatever reason, she was passed over at adoption events, and has been with me ever since. Poodie had a hip surgery in 2001, but is doing great! She can't see or hear well anymore, but it doesn't stop her from digging for moles in the back yard!!!

"Gertie" 14 year old Beagle - Like her brother Farley, Gertie Girl's legs don't bend! She walks on her tip toes and like her brother, requires frequent nail trims to allow her to walk pain free. Her hearing and sight are limited, but she still likes to get the entire facility "singing" - the concerts last about a minute and are always entertaining. She and her brother are often found napping together wrapped up in blankies.

"Dickens" 10 year old Shiba mix - Dickens came from the N VA SPCA. He had been abused and terrorized by two young boys. Dickie can be protective, and after being returned to the SPCA, they felt his issues made him too much of a "risk" to re-adopt out. He does fine here, has a harem of gals and is quite happy to be alive!

"Cindy Sue" 11 year old Dalmation - Cindy spent seven years of her life chained to a doghouse, isolated behind a gas station. The N VA SPCA Humane Investigators got her out of this terrible situation and tried to get her adopted. Because of her space issues resulting from being chained, she needs a very specific adoption arrangement to be successful. Cindy became a RMD dog after she was deemed "too much of a liability" to adopt out.

"Molly" 12 year old Spaniel mix - Molly was a N VA SPCA dog that was deemed a liability for adoption after she nipped the pants leg of a doctor in the nursing home she was living in. She went on to be my best demo dog for the 4-H Dog Club because she loves kids and car rides! Molly is always great company and loves the RMD lifestyle.

"Buster Crow" 11 year old Beagle Daschound mix - Buster came from the Madison County Shelter. When he came here he loved to "mark" everything that he came in contact with! Neutering improved this habit, but it made him hard to adopt! Buster has his girls - Lily and Molly - and the three of them are happy and inseperable!

"Starr Baby" 9 year old Bull Terrier mix - Starr was a N VA SPCA dog who was said to be a liability because she acted out so badly at adoption days. She is now an RMD dog and loves to spend her days helping while we do our regular chores. She has a big crush on Dudley and likes to "hang" with Tilly. Her favorite place is a bed on top of the crates in the back kennel building!

"Miss Thing" 8 year old Jack Russell mix - Miss Thing came from the Page Shelter. She had been thrown from a car, was bald, scarred, and covered in fleas. When she got here, it soon became obvious that she had been abused. Today she spends her time in bed - under the covers of course!
"Jett" 10 year old Lab Chow mix - Jett came from the Madison County Shelter. She had an eye condition that made her eyes swollen and full of pus. After an operation she is still a bit seeing impaired, and has scars around her neck from an embedded collar. Jett has learned to trust and is doing well - although still a bit aloof!

"Silly Tilly" 7 year old Bluetick Hound mix - Tilly came from the Madison Shelter. She had been brought in as a stray with five pups. At some point she was treated very badly, and raised arms can still send her into a panic. She works with Dudley, and Starr teaching "doggie skills" to unsocialized newcomers.

"Levi" 11 year old Beagle - Good Ole' Levi! Believe it or not - he's the only aggressive dog at RMD. He came from HART and failed in a couple of homes. I have learned much about Dominance Aggression from this boy! 99% of the time he is loving and goofy - but ya gotta watch out! He does fine here in a structured environment and he just loves Penny and Trixie.

"MaMa" 11 year old beagle mix - MaMa came to RMD in 1996 from the Madison County Shelter. She was scared and very pregnant - the first night here she gave birth to 6 pups. Four of the pups were adopted, but two of the harder "kids" are still with me. It took a year to get her to trust enough to be touched. She can still be very shy.

"Beau" 11 year old Hound mix - Beau has been here since he was 10 weeks old. His nine littermates found homes through RAWL - but Beau could not function in the "real world." We had to rescue this family from a barn in the middle of a field. The pups never laid eyes on a human until they were 9 weeks old! He is loving and sweet and loves to run in the large yard, although he is slowing a bit these days!

"Taylor & Simon" 10 year old Pappillion mixes - Simon and Taylor were rescued along with their mom and two other siblings from a hoarder in PA. They were unsocialized and scared. The N VA SPCA placed the other three dogs, only to have tragedy strike. Two of the dogs were so scared they bolted from their adoptive families and were killed. To this day only I can touch these guys!

"Dudley" 8 year old Walker Hound - Dudley came to me from HART - he has a severe case of "object guarding" aggression. Over the years we have improved this greatly, but it would be hard to integrate him into family life. He is the best dog here for teaching dogs how to play - this is a very important job to have, and one he does quite well!

"Utah" 9 year old Beagle mix - Miz Tah is one of MaMa's kids - she was adopted but returned - she's a pill! Always on the move. She loves ball and Frisbie but we need to be careful as she has a bad knee. We call her our "Little Irritant."

"Bernard" 9 year old Beagle mix - Yes, 35 lb. MaMa dog DID give birth to 75 lb. Bernerd! He is Utah's bro - he kept getting passed over at adoption days - so it was decided he would stay here at RMD. For seven years he helped me socialize unsocialized dogs. Now he's takin' it easy!

"Trixie and Penny" 16 year old Hound mixes - The girls are our oldest RMD canines and have always been together! They started out as strays at RAWL's Shelter. When they arrived it was obvious somebody had used them for target practice. Penny had wounds on her back and both were riddled with buckshot. It took me over a year to gain their trust. They would never have "made it" in an adoptive home. Today they have many "old dog" issues - Penny is on meds for her arthritis and both have special diets, but for old gals - they are doing very well.

"Lilly" 9 year old Spaniel mix - Lilly was originially rescued by HART with her puppies. It was soon verry obvious that this gal hadn't had any human contact and was not considered adoptable. To this day she cannot stand to be touched - brushing her is quite a challenge - but she is happy, loves her friends and is doing quite well.
